What Eye Yoga Cannot Promise
Eye yoga should not be advertised as a proven cure for nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia, cataracts, glaucoma, retinal disease, or macular degeneration. Who May Benefit from Yoga for the Eyes?
This practice may be particularly useful for:

Preparing for the Practice
Yoga for the eyes should always be gentle. There is no benefit in forcing the eyes to move farther, focus harder, or tolerate discomfort.
* Create a supportive environment
Choose a quiet place with soft, comfortable lighting. Avoid practicing while facing intense sunlight, a glaring lamp, or a bright screen.
* Remove visual distractions
Turn away from the computer or put the phone aside. Remove glasses if you can see the chosen practice objects comfortably without them. Contact lenses may increase dryness for some people, so consider removing them when practical.
* Establish a balanced posture
Sit in a chair or on the floor with the spine comfortably upright. Allow the shoulders to soften and the chin to remain parallel to the floor. Relax the hands on the thighs.
* Relax the breath
Take several slow, natural breaths. Do not hold the breath during eye movements. Let the jaw loosen and allow the tongue to rest.
* Begin with blinking
Blink gently several times. Notice whether the eyelids close completely without squeezing.
* Practice within a comfortable range
Stop immediately if you experience pain, nausea, dizziness, strong headache, persistent blurred vision, flashing lights, or increased symptoms.
Basic Yoga Exercises for the Eyes
A complete practice may take approximately 8 to 12 minutes. Beginners can start with fewer repetitions.
1. Conscious Blinking
Purpose: To refresh the tear film and interrupt prolonged staring.
Instructions:
1. Sit comfortably and look straight ahead.
2. Soften your gaze rather than staring at one point.
3. Blink slowly and gently 10 times.
4. Allow the eyelids to close fully with each blink, but do not squeeze.
5. Close the eyes for one natural breath.

2. Eye Rest with Warm Hands
This practice is often called palming, although the palms should not press on the eyeballs.

3. Cup the palms over the eye area without pressing on the eyes.

3. Exhale as you slowly move the gaze downward.
4. Continue moving only the eyes.
5. Repeat 5 times.
6. Close the eyes and rest for two breaths.
Do not force the eyes toward the extreme edges of vision.
4. Side-to-Side Eye Movements
Purpose: To gently mobilize the eyes horizontally.
Instructions:
1. Look straight ahead.
2. Keep the head and neck still.

6. Repeat 5 times in each direction.

5. Diagonal Movements
Purpose: To explore a wider range of eye movement.
Instructions:
1. Imagine an “X” in front of you.
2. Look toward the upper-right corner.
3. Slowly move the gaze toward the lower-left corner.
4. Repeat this diagonal 3 to 5 times.
5. Return to the center.
6. Look toward the upper-left corner.
7. Move the gaze toward the lower-right corner.
8. Repeat 3 to 5 times.
9. Close the eyes and rest.
6. Gentle Eye Circles
Purpose: To coordinate multidirectional eye movement.
Instructions:
1. Imagine the face of a large clock in front of you.
2. Begin by looking toward 12 o’clock.
3. Slowly trace the outer edge of the imaginary clock with your gaze.
4. Complete one circle without moving the head.
5. Repeat 2 or 3 times clockwise.
6. Close the eyes and rest.
7. Repeat 2 or 3 times counterclockwise.
8. Finish by blinking gently.
Use a smaller circle if the movement feels uncomfortable.
7. Near-and-Far Focusing
Purpose: To give the focusing system variety after prolonged close work.
Instructions:
1. Hold one thumb approximately 10 to 14 inches in front of the face.
2. Choose a second object at least several yards away.
3. Look at the thumb for approximately 3 seconds.
4. Shift your gaze to the distant object for 3 to 5 seconds.
5. Notice details without squinting.
6. Return your gaze to the thumb.
7. Continue alternating 8 to 10 times.
8. Finish by looking into the distance for several relaxed breaths.
This should feel like a gentle shift of attention, not a test of visual sharpness.
8. Thumb Tracking
Purpose: To practice smooth visual tracking.
Instructions:
1. Extend one arm forward with the thumb upright.
2. Focus comfortably on the thumbnail.
3. Slowly move the arm from side to side while following the thumb with the eyes.
4. Keep the head still, but do not strain to maintain fixation.
5. Repeat 3 to 5 times.
6. Next, move the thumb slowly upward and downward.
7. Follow it with the eyes for another 3 to 5 repetitions.
8. Blink and rest.
Keep the movement slow enough that the eyes can follow smoothly.
9. Peripheral-Vision Awareness
Purpose: To release narrow, concentrated staring and expand visual awareness.
Instructions:
1. Look softly at a point directly in front of you.
2. Without moving your eyes, notice what is visible at the edges of your visual field.
3. Become aware of shapes, light, movement, and space to the right and left.
4. Maintain a relaxed central gaze.
5. Breathe naturally for 30 to 60 seconds.
6. Let the eyes receive the whole visual field rather than reaching for individual objects.
This practice can be especially helpful after intense computer work.
10. Closed-Eye Rest
Purpose: To complete the practice with relaxation.
Instructions:
1. Close the eyes gently.
2. Release all effort around the eyelids.
3. Soften the forehead, temples, cheeks, and jaw.
4. Observe the natural breath.
5. Remain still for one to two minutes.
6. Before opening the eyes, blink lightly behind the closed lids.
7. Open the eyes gradually and allow them to adjust to the light.
A Five-Minute Practice for the Workday
When time is limited, use this sequence:
1. Sit upright and release the shoulders.
2. Blink slowly 10 times.
3. Look up and down 5 times.
4. Look from side to side 5 times.
5. Alternate between a near and distant object 8 times.
6. Rest the closed eyes behind cupped hands for 30 seconds.
7. Finish by looking into the distance for at least 20 seconds.

Important Safety Considerations
Consult an optometrist or ophthalmologist before beginning eye exercises if you have recently had eye surgery, retinal problems, uncontrolled glaucoma, significant eye inflammation, a detached retina, double vision, neurological symptoms affecting vision, or another diagnosed eye condition.
Additional precautions include:
* Never press directly on the eyeballs.
* Never stare at the sun or another intense light source.
* Avoid forceful, rapid, or extreme eye movements.
* Do not use eye yoga to postpone a needed eye examination.
* Continue using prescribed glasses, contact lenses, medications, and medical treatments.
* Stop any exercise that causes pain, dizziness, nausea, headache, or worsening vision.
* Candle-gazing practices such as trataka require additional precautions and may not be suitable for people with light sensitivity, migraine, dry eyes, certain retinal conditions, or a tendency to overstrain.
Sudden loss of vision, a curtain-like shadow, flashes of light, a sudden increase in floaters, severe eye pain, or new neurological symptoms require urgent medical attention.
A Broader Yogic Approach to Eye Health
Yoga for the eyes is most beneficial when it becomes part of a larger pattern of healthy visual behavior. Support the practice by:
* Taking regular breaks from near work
* Blinking fully and frequently
* Keeping screens approximately an arm’s length away
* Positioning the screen slightly below eye level
* Reducing glare and adjusting screen brightness
* Using appropriate lighting for reading
